::: Test system for power steering control box

::: CHALLENGE :::

Develop a data acquisition system for datalogging of pressure x Torque, Force x displacement and torque x displacement in power steering systems.

::: SOLUTION :::

Using a PC with data acquisition cards from National Instruments, and a software developed in LabVIEW for signal processing, charting, reporting and data storage in the database.

::: Description :::

A manufacturer of power steering systems needed a system capable of acquiring the curves of torque, displacement, force and pressure of their products. The system should also be able to store these values and issue reports and so that they could be easily found later on.

For data acquisition was used a M-series data acquisition board from National Instruments . The M Series boards have analog input and output channels, digital inputs and outputs, the ability to read encoder signals, and can also generate signals in PWM. The signal conditioning was done by SCC modules from National Instruments, which are directly connected to the data acquisition board. This solution eliminated the need for external signal conditioning, resulting in a great savings to the system.

The software was developed in LabVIEW and was based on internal standards regulations for these tests, which were previously generated manually. The software has a product models registration screen, which can be created, edited or deleted different models of the product along with its data and limits for testing. All important changes are recorded in a log of occurrences. Access to this feature, as well as some other features of the software is password protected, and allowed the access only to certain levels of users, which access is configured via one user management screen.

The system generates curves such as of pressure x Torque, Torque x Displacement and Force x Displacement. The software also controls a motor through an inverter, which is responsible for handling the steering assembly, and reading sensors used in automation bench.

At the end of the test the user can request a test report, which is generated by the application software, in the form of an MS Word document, which includes all data and curves of the test. The test results, along with the tested model and date/time are stored in a database compatible with SQL Server, so that it becomes available for reports and traceability of tests.
